Budget Breakdown: Chiapas
At first glance, it may seem like we spent a lot more money than we did in Mexico City and Oaxaca. However, we spent a total of 15 days in the state of Chiapas, covering 3 cities during our time there.
Compared to the other locations, we definitely spent more on sightseeing in the state of Chiapas. Another thing to note is that many of the sights that we visited were about an hour from where we were staying, so transportation to those sights also cost more than others (our transportation costs to sights are included in the "Sights" category). On the other hand, our travel costs were much lower in each of the three cities we stayed in Chiapas because Tuxtla Gutierrez, San Cristobal de las Casas, and Palenque were more walkable, and we didn't have to rely so much on taxis and buses to get around.
Finally, our expenses in the "Other" category were much higher due to our trip to the pharmacy for medication for Andy's sunburn as well as cold medicine and nausea medication for Felicia. Thankfully, she now has something to help her battle that motion sickness. We also had to restock on sunscreen and bug spray, which isn't much less expensive than it is back at home.
We originally had planned to keep our daily budget at $60.00/day, but with some unexpected expenses we went over by only a few dollars, which isn't so bad.
